Discussion Forum – Alumni Awards

What kind of alumni recognition is your college/program awarding?

  • What does the selection process looks like (criteria, who decides, application, etc.)?
  • How many awards (are there separate categories such as LA/SA, recent alum, lifetime achievement, etc.)
  • How often is the award (annually, with reunions, etc.)
  • What does the recognition look like (plaque, publicity, event, etc.)
  • Lessons learned (good and bad)

Please add your comments and input in the comment section below as a resource for other programs.

    1. What does the selection process looks like (criteria, who decides, application, etc.)? Our selection committee is comprised of a sub committee of our College’s Advisory Council along with faculty from each area of the College. There is a formal process that requires a packet which consists of a CV and three letters of recommendations from Auburn graduates.
    2. How many awards (are there separate categories such as LA/SA, recent alum, lifetime achievement, etc.)
Our College recognizes three Distinguished Alumni Awards in the category of Academia, Private Practice and Other which includes industry and government, public health, state veterinarians). The University recognizes lifetime achievement award winners and our graduates have been recipients in the past. We recognize graduates ten years after graduating with a Young Achiever’s Award.
    3. How often is the award (annually, with reunions, etc.)
The Distinguished Alumni Awards are annually and recognized during the College’s Commencement. The Young Achiever’s are recognized at the Opening Session during our Annual Conference along with their class reunions.
    4. What does the recognition look like (plaque, publicity, event, etc.)
Donor Recognition at our College with Displays along with beautiful framed certificates
    5. Lessons learned (good and bad)

  2. We give out 3 awards-two for class giving, and a distinguished alumnus award. The 2 for class giving are awarded during our reunion event each fall. Criteria is $$ raised and % of participation.
The Distinguished Alumnus award is given each January at the state VMA meeting. A committee comprised of the dean, 2 associate deans, and the past 2 recipients review nominations. Not sure that this is the best committee structure, as sometimes there is considerable bias. Would be interested to see how others handle.
