Speaker: Richard M. DeBowes, DVM, MS, DACVS

Getting From Here To There: a message of self efficacy for those who go out every day to’ friend raise’ and engage in development during the second worst economy in the history of our country.

Based on his experiences in veterinary practice and with a keen awareness of the “people skills” needed to be a great veterinarian and team member, Dr. DeBowes worked tirelessly with Dr. Kathy Ruby to develop the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience (VLE) and a series of other interactive, experiential leadership education experiences for healthcare team members.  In truth, the skills apply broadly across a range of disciplines in both personal and professional lives.  These programs have been presented to students, faculty, practitioners, health care team members and small business employees in both medical and non medical venture in numerous countries across four continents.

RICHARD M. DEBOWES, DVM, MS, DACVS, is a professor of surgery and associate dean for Veterinary Development and External Relations at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  A 1979 veterinary graduate of the University of Illinois , Dr. DeBowes has practiced in both private practice and academic settings.   Formerly the Clinical Sciences chair at both Kansas State and Washington State University Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. DeBowes has worked within and led large veterinary health care teams.  He has also been directly involved in friend raising, advocate enrollment and development efforts at both Kansas State and Washington State during the past 16 years. These experiences have provided him with numerous opportunities to assess the impact of personalities, communication, servant leadership and teamwork in the health care and development environment.  You can learn more about Rick’s background at http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/people-vcs/faculty/debowes.aspx  and explore the annual AVMA VLE by visiting: www.vetmed.wsu.edu/orgvle
